On the mound, it is a battle between two pitchers who have not played in the majors yet. Casey Mize will be the starting pitcher tonight for the Tigers. Mize, 23, was the Tigers’ first overall pick in the 2018 draft. Mize has displayed excellent control across the minors. In 109 1⁄3 innings across classes A-Advanced and Double-A in 2019, Mize had a 2.55 ERA, 8.7 K/9, and only 1.9 BB/9. According to MLB Pipeline, Mize is the Tigers’ No. 2 prospect, and he is the No. 8 prospect in baseball. As a result, Mize is expected to play a large role in the Tigers’ future.
Starting on the mound for the White Sox will be 25-year-old right-hander Dane Dunning. Dunning last pitched in 2018, but he was shut down in June that year, and he eventually underwent Tommy John surgery. That surgery made Dunning unable to pitch in 2019, but he is finally ready to make his MLB debut after a long wait. In 2018, Dunning pitched 86 1⁄3 innings across classes A-Advanced and Double-A. During those innings, Dunning had a 2.71 ERA, 10.4 K/9, and 2.7 BB/9. Per MLB Pipeline, Dunning is the White Sox’s No. 8 prospect. As recently as the preseason of 2019, Dunning was ranked 80th among all prospects.
