Some news, before the lineups. In order of shock:
- Ian Hamilton was designated for assignment. A space needed to be made on the 40-man. See below.
- Evan Marshall was put on the injured list with “shoulder inflammation.” Ricky was surprised by the move, which tells you it was more or less to make room and
- Call up 2020 first-rounder Garrett Crochet to the active roster for a 10-day audition for the postseason. GM Rick Hahn said pregame the White Sox still see Crochet as a starter, but he’ll be a bullpen piece for the team in 2020.
Ricky said pregame he’ll throw Crochet “into the fire,” which sounds aggressive but really just means the White Sox have only a few appearances from which to judge whether the rookie is part of the team going forward.
Per Hahn, Aaron Bummer is in Cincinnati with the team, Carlos Rodón back in Schaumburg. Probably an indication that Bummer could be activated at any time, while Rodón won’t be active until Cleveland, back home in Chicago, or not at all.
Oh, also, the Marshall IL is retroactive, so he will be available to pitch vs. the Cubs in the season’s final weekend once his shoulder “heals.”
