It was not a banner day for the DSL Sox, who fell 12-1 in seven innings to the 37-20 DSL Padres. They only scraped up five hits and a walk as a lineup, two of those hits belonging to Victor Quezada and increasing his season line to .250/.353/.436 over 49 games. Javier Mora was responsible for the only extra-base hit of the day, a third-inning double. The sole Sox run scored in the fourth, Juan Mercedes reaching on error, Quezada singling him to second, a wild pitch bumping them both up a base, then Carlos Jiménez grounding out to first to drive in Mercedes. Godwin Bennett, who scored five runs yesterday, was removed after one at-bat; this is fairly common practice in the DSL. A day after striking out 16 times as a team, they only struck out twice.
Gabriel Rodriguez had the rough four-inning start, allowing six runs (five earned), half of those in the first after allowing three straight singles and a double. He did start the fifth inning, but a leadoff HBP followed immediately by a passed ball and a walk took him out the game for Miguel Toribio, who gave up an RBI double, a walk, a two-RBI double, another walk, and a sacrifice fly before escaping the inning. He also allowed four more runs in the sixth on a bases-loaded HBP and a subsequent bases-clearing double.
Carlos Hinestroza is wrapping up a strong debut season, throwing 1 ⅓ scoreless innings to finish today’s game, allowing a single and making an error. The 18-year-old righty has thrown 36 ⅔ innings in 22 games of relief, allowing 20 runs (only 10 earned for a 2.45 ERA), walking 12 and striking out 27.
