Monday’s White Sox Spring Training Update

Hahn hosts a Town Hall, Big Baby gets goofy, and TA and Luis rake

MLB: Spring Training-Los Angeles Dodgers at Chicago White Sox Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

The Sox Spring Break continued on Monday, with Rick Hahn hosting a sort of Town Hall with Jason Benetti and Len Kasper:

Some takeaways:

  • Nick Madrigal is a week or two from being completely without physical restrictions, and the White Sox anticipate him in Cactus League games in early March
  • Michael Kopech is being treated like everybody else, throwing on Day 1 or Day 2, cognizant that he hasn’t faced MLB hitters for two years. He and Garrett Crochet are projected long-term in the rotation, but don’t have an innings base to work off of in 2021. The White Sox need to be creative with how they use them, including having them ready to be strong and help through October
  • No early word on opt-outs from any players this season
  • Third catcher on the roster? Hahn doesn’t really answer
  • Yoelqui Céspedes is knocking on the door tools-wise, but the rust he has due to game inactivity will slow him down. Will not start in Charlotte, as Hahn talks of Céspedes joining an affiliate “in May.”
  • Cites Gavin Sheets as a player he’s really looking forward to seeing, given his new outfield versatility, along with Jake Burger

It was Eloy Jiménez’s turn to Zoom on Monday, and as you can imagine, he did not disappoint:

Hopefully, only TA can touch Lance Lynn this way:

And our first taste of Luis Robert this season. DELICIOUS.

Finally, Yoán Moncada strolled into camp looking colorful, then toned it down for some sweet work at the hot corner:
