Lance Lynn’s energy is volcanic. On the surface, he’s stone-faced and speaks in a steady monotone, but in moments of triumph he spits, roars, and his emotions flow like lava.
Lynn is a self-described asshole on the mound, but I don’t know if that’s an accurate assessment. He has plowed through the 2021 season like a bulldozer, but he’s done it with calculated intent, not so much interested in strikeouts as he is in retiring the side in the most economical way possible.
It’s worked beautifully. With a league-leading ERA of 1.23, Lynn has looked like the best winter trade the White Sox have made in recent memory. This was reinforced last week in a dominant win over the Detroit Tigers, where he allowed only one run, a solo shot by Willi Castro. Trouble came calling in the second inning, when Lynn loaded up the bases after surrendering a single and two walks, but he busted three strikes for a clean final out.
Deservedly, Lynn has been a Cy Young finalist for the last two seasons. And if his 7-1 record is any indication, he’s on that same track once again.
Confidence. Intent. Passion. Lance Lynn’s volcanic energy will take the White Sox far into the season.
