White Sox Minor League Update: July 26, 2021

The rookie leagues are at it again, with the ball flying in Arizona but not so much in the DSL, as both clubs came away with losses

Misael González had quite the day, with a homer and reaching base four times.

The ACL game was a bit better than the DSL’s, even if the result was the same, a loss. It was definitely more exciting, as ACL came back from a 4-0 deficit after the first inning to take a 5-4 lead by the third. The ACL Guardians ... er wait, not yet ... took the lead by the eighth inning, and the Sox tied the game in the ninth to force extras. However, it got out of hand in the 10th, and the ACL White Sox lost the game, 12-8.

It was just an odd and very good performance from the offense overall with a lot of extra-base hits. Here are some:

González went 2-for-3 on the night, with his second hit being a double. Meanwhile, Benyamin Bailey made sure we did not forget about him after his demotion, hitting a homer of his own.

I don’t blame Sean for not taking a video of Anderson Comas at-bats, but he did hit a couple homers today, too. Bailey and Comas were the No. 8 and 9 hitters, so the lower part of the lineup was showing out today with the big bats.

Those six hits between González, Bailey, and Comas were the vast majority of the offensive production for the ACL Sox. Sam Abbott, Jefferson Mendoza, and Wilber Sánchez were the only other hitters to have a hit. Mendoza’s hit was a single, but it came in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game. Sánchez had the final hit of the nigh,t but the pitching had already done them in for the loss.

The starting pitching was just not good. Dilmer Mejía really struggled today, especially in the first inning, where he allowed four runs. Overall, after 4 23 innings pitched, Mejía allowed six runs on eight hits. The bullpen was much better, just allowing one more run on the day. The best of that bunch was Cam Beauchamp, who threw 2 13 shutout innings with three strikeouts. Deivi Diaz also had a good day, with a no-hit outing, but he only struck out one of his five outs.

Not a great game for the DSL Sox, as they go down, 5-1, without much offense to speak of. They were only able to get three hits on the day, and all three came from the bottom of the lineup. Both players had perfect days, Cesar Jiménez went 1-for-1, a homer, and a walk. Meanwhile, Alvaro Aguero was 2-for-2, both singles. That was it.

The pitching was a bit better, but the defense accounted for three unearned runs. Oriel Castro got the start and was pretty good, with three innings allowed just one run. He did put seven runners, but the damage was minimal. Francisco Benitez had the most trouble, but that’s also where the three unearned runs came into play.

Where it really got going was Carlos Hinestroza, who now has a 0.96 ERA after a scoreless 2 23 innings today. He did an odd thing: He didn’t issue a walk or strike anybody out, so that’s pretty confusing for a DSL pitcher. Maybe the box score is actually wrong, but even if it is, Hinestroza is having a decent start to the year.
