Ladies and Gentlemen! Your attention, please. Back by popular demand, catcher Yasmani Grandal! Oh, what? Of course, he promptly gets injured. Sigh.
Yes, Yaz has claimed his second Player of the Week title in a row. And yes, he is currently sitting out with a sore calf. And yes, the two-time All-Star will miss out on this year’s festivities, falling just short in the polls and leaving three members of the White Sox pitching staff as the team’s sole delegation.
This comes on the tail of Grandal’s recent hot streak, where he smacked 14 hits, walloped four homers, and drove in 15 runs over his last 15 games. He’s been a rock-steady helping hand for the White Sox in a season of gut-punching injuries, and one of very few consistent and familiar faces.
Yasmani Grandal’s contribution to the White Sox is as clear as Crystal Pepsi. He gets on base and knocks in runs when they’re badly needed.
Yaz deserves to be an All-Star this season, but he’ll get another run at it next year. What’s more important is that he gets back on his feet to help put down the Minnesota Twins (again), and then dominate the Orioles during a jaunt to Baltimore.
Then comes the All-Star break, and an opportunity for the White Sox to tend their wounded and bury their dead. Let’s hope that the Sox come out even stronger on the other side (hopefully with a little help from Rick Hahn).
