White Sox Minor League Update: August 17, 2021

Yoelqui Céspedes gets promoted to Birmingham, the rookie league teams get wins, and half of the system gets postponed

Kannapolis goes down, as Jared Kelley is only able to get two outs. He had 32 pitches before he was pulled, and that is a lot in one inning. He wasn’t helped by the defense, either, with the first two batters of the game reaching base on errors from Samil Polanco. Kelley followed those free passes with a couple of his own, walking the next two hitters.

It was a bullpen game after that, and the relievers did pretty well over 8 13 innings, allowing just two runs. Karan Patel and Tyson Messer commanded the middle innings with a combined five innings of one-run ball. It was a good enough performance to keep the Cannon Ballers in the game, but the offense did not have it today.

The hitters combined for six safeties on the day, each one from a different batter. James Beard had the only run all to himself, with his fourth homer of the season. Other than that, Kannapolis was 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position. Can’t win a game doing that.

We had no update on Monday, namely because the only team in action was the ACL White Sox, so we’re spilling that win into today’s update.

Despite coming into the game as heavy underdogs to Cleveland, an eight-spot in the fourth inning would be “all” the White Sox needed. And that figure eight came (mostly) courtesy of two big hits, a two-run double from Logan Glass, and then a grand slam from Wilfred Veras. Veras now boasts an OPS more than .900, with Terrell Tatum and Shawn Goosenberg three hitters in the lineup with such stellar marks.

A great all-around game, as seven walks help the Sox score six runs, while the pitchers toss a shutout. Benyamin Bailey had himself an odd day while leading the Sox in OBP today, going 0-for-1 with three walks, and scoring off of one of them. Misael González added the only extra-base hit of the game for either team, a double that drove in two runs in the win. On the top picks front, Wes Kath had a hit today, while Colson Montgomery got the day off.

The ACL Sox only needed four arms in this game: Brooks Gosswein, Johnny Ray (a no-hit stint), Noah Owens, and Everhett Hazelwood had 13 strikeouts and did not walk a single batter. Not too shabby of a pitching performance by everyone.

Both teams had a lot of chances to score, with 22 combined hits, but the DSL Sox got a few more to help them win by one. Layan Tapia led the way with three hits, and he had his first professional homer. He was not the only one, though, because Carlos Jiménez had his first pro homer too, a two-run shot. Meanwhile, the pitching did not start well, but Daniel González and Carlos Hinestroza each had two shutout innings to close out the game, and the win.
