White Sox Minor League Update August 24, 2021

A mixed bag on the day but Jake Burger homered twice and Norge Vera pitched more than one inning

Kade McClure and the pitching staff just were not good enough, or really good at all. McClure went four innings and allowed eight runs, including a four-run first inning. Tanner Banks replaced him and was better but still allowed two runs over three innings. After that, Nik Turley allowed another two in the eighth.

Meanwhile, the offense was actually pretty good, with 10 hits. Zach Remillard and Gavin Sheets were two of the three batters with two hits. The third was Jake Burger, with two homers on the day to bring his Triple-A total to 14. He is a candidate to get called back up in September, and he keeps proving why he should be.

For those on Romy González watch, he was not as good compared to his first two games, but he did come away with a double. So in three games, at least one hit in each.

A great pitching staff matchup as the Barons come away with the 2-1 win. Johan Dominguez got the start and was great over five innings. He did allow, on average, a hit an inning, but due in part to six strikeouts he only allowed one run. The bullpen was even better, with four shutout innings. Brian Glowicki pitched two shutout innings, and then Luis Ledo got the six-out save to close out the game.

For the offense, well, they really only needed two hits to win. The first, courtesy of Yolbert Sánchez, was his fourth homer since his promotion.

The second came in the fifth inning, with Craig Dedelow hitting his 14th homer for the go-ahead and winning run.

The Dash had a 4-0 lead after three innings that disappeared by extra innings, but the Dash still came out on top after some 10th-inning heroics. Before that, Harvin Mendoza got called back up and had two hits in his return to Winston-Salem. Oddly enough Luis Mieses, who was demoted with Mendoza earlier this year, had two hits as well, as both are performing much better than they were at the beginning of the season. They led the team in hits and had two of the Dash’s three extra-base hits.

The third was a walk-off homer from Evan Skoug, his seventh homer of the season and his only hit of the night.

It was a bullpen game, and Yoelvin Silven and McKinley Moore were among the pitchers to not allow a run. Silven started this game and went two innings, while Moore was middle relief and had a perfect inning.

A big loss in Kannapolis, as nothing went right today for the Cannon Ballers. The lineup was only able to come away with four hits, the biggest coming from Samil Polanco.

Wilber Sánchez had a hit as well, among notable players, his first double since his promotion. The pitching was much worse. Every single pitcher, and there were six of them, saw a run cross the plate, with the first two allowing seven runs. Martin Carrasco only went four innings and allowed four runs. Tyson Messer replaced him and only got one more out (four) than runs allowed (three). It was not pretty anywhere today. Even the defense struggled with two errors and a passed ball.

A good win for the ACL Sox, with the offense getting all the runs they needed in the first half of the game. The Sox had 12 hits, with a third of them coming from Wilfred Veras. He had three doubles on the day, and a single for good measure. Colson Montgomery, who has not been hitting very well lately, had two hits and added two walks. The big hit, a solo homer in the fourth inning, came from the bat of Johnabiell Laureano.

Meanwhile on the mound, it was pretty much smooth sailing with that big lead early on. Brooks Gosswein, a fourth round pick in 2021, started the game and went three innings with just one run allowed to set the tone. The final three innings of the game, and the final three pitchers, combined for seven strikeouts and just one hit allowed. Haylen Green was the best among them in his first professional game, with a perfect eighth inning to keep the game 7-3.

The first game of the day but the last one you will look at was a winner for the Sox organization. It was a team effort, with five runs scored, and the pitching did very well until the final inning.

Norge Vera started today — no, really, he did. He lasted five outs and did not allow a hit nor a run. He did walk a couple of batters, but he was pretty good as a whole. Because Vera is not really a starting pitcher yet it was really just a bullpen game, but somehow the fourth pitcher used in the game went five innings. Manuel Veloz got the win and struck out four over those five innings, with the only run to score unearned.

The bats were led by a couple of catchers, Manuel Guariman and Luis Pineda. Both had two hits on the day, all four were singles. Guariman drove in two and his two hits today moved his batting average over .400 in the DSL. Alvaro Aguero had the only extra-base hit for the Sox, with a triple.
