South Side Sox 2021 Player of the Week (ending September 11): Luis Robert

The Cuban crusher is on track for two dozen doubles, despite his stunted season.

Mitch Ransdell/South Side Sox

It’s not all long ball for La Pantera.

In Saturday’s matchup against the Boston Red Sox, Luis Robert dropped in one of the prettiest base hits you could imagine, but turned and burned around first to stretch a single into a double.

It’s that kind of heads-up play that the White Sox will be relying on as the 2021 postseason gets underway.

All told, Robert went 4-for-5 Saturday night, driving in three runs. It’s the latest in a string of successes since his return from the injured list. Luis Robert is, to use the parlance of our times, on freaking fire.

No. 88 is putting up a slash of .334/.381/.538 over 52 games, giving us a great point of reference in comparing this season with Robert’s 56 games in 2020. His strikeouts are down, his doubles are up, and only a healthy dose of caution is keeping him from stealing bases left and right.

As White Sox pitching begins to feel late-season aches and pains, big hitting numbers will be essential for postseason success. With Robert on top of his game, there’s the distant glint of an MVP trophy in his future.
