South Side Sox 2021 Player of the Week (ending September 18): Gavin Sheets

In a dominant display against the Angels, Sheets shows that he’s the right fit for the White Sox’ metaphorical mattress.

The kids are back in school, the pumpkins have grown to be the size of Yermín Mercedes’ head, and rookie Gavin Sheets has sent yet another ball soaring into a roaring Chicago crowd.

That was one of his three hits last Tuesday against the Angels, landing just a triple shy of the cycle. That homer, incidentally, landed just shy of the Dan Ryan, plunking down in the bleachers at nearly 450 feet.

Sheets’ total of four RBIs contributed mightily to a trouncing of the Angels in a 9-3 victory, but it hasn’t always been this smooth.

Struggling with two strikes in the count, Sheets has often fallen victim to Ks. But when he’s tuned in, the Maryland native can pull together some terrific hitting in-between slumps.

Yes, the White Sox designated hitter slot has looked like a game of musical chairs throughout the 2021 season, but Sheets has certainly gleamed his share of stellar moments.

With Andrew Vaughn down, Adam Engel in doubt, and Brian Goodwin spinning his tires, Sheets’ biggest contributions may be yet to come.
