2024 South Side Sox Top Prospect No. 94: Carlton Perkins

A promising project arm who’ll need to find his role in the system

Melissa Sage-Bollenbach is a die-hard White Sox fan and Mom of two incredible kids! She also has a Cubby hubby, but it’s OK because he likes the Sox. She went to the first Field of Dreams game, and it was the best baseball experience she's ever had!

With the 449th overall pick in the 2023 MLB draft, the White Sox selected right-handed pitcher Carlton Perkins from Cowley County Community College in Arkansas City, Kan.

Another junior college arm, Perkins, made 21 appearances primarily out of the bullpen for the Tigers in 2023. He went 1-1 with a 6.13 ERA, one save, 21 walks, and 50 strikeouts. He owns a very respectable 11.34 K/9, which could be an indication there is some raw and/or deceptive power in that arm.

The 20-year-old hails from Lee’s Summit, Mo., and he played for the Trenton Thunder in the MLB Draft League, where he went 1-0 with a 4.15 ERA in 13 innings. However, wetting his beak as a pro post-draft did not turn out so well, as Perkins began with three solid starts but was rocked badly in his fourth (six earned over just two outs), which knocked him to the bullpen for his final two appearances.

Given Perkins’ raw talent and dual role in Arizona after the draft, 2024 will probably be spent getting him a full year of ACL ball, with a move up to Kannapolis after the draft is things really start to click.
