Max Stassi slides over to the South Side

Solid defensive catcher, probably close to free. It’s another Jerry Reinsdorf triumph!

On Saturday afternoon, the White Sox crossed “veteran catching help” off of their wish list for 2024 by once more standing near a dumpster outside of the Atlanta front office and finding Max Stassi — his uniform pockets stuffed with cash, to boot.

On paper, the deal is Stassi for a PTBNL and/or cash. But given that the Braves are taking on most of Stassi’s $7 million for 2024 and the fact that the White Sox couldn’t possibly have much Atlanta needs, envision this as a rebate trade where the two clubs will agree on an amount that goes back to Atlanta based on how much the backstop contributes in 2024.

This trade structure could also be a hedge against Stassi being unable to play a full 2024 season due to injury, effectiveness or family issues; he missed all of 2023 for the Angels due to a hip injury and his son being born three months prematurely. (Anaheim traded Stassi to Atlanta on December 8.)

Stassi has never been an MLB regular, so a role mentoring Korey Lee/Carlos Pérez/Edgar Quero is envisioned. In fact 2022, when Stassi slashed .180/.267/.303 with the Angels, is the only time in his 10-season career he logged more than 102 games. Baseball-Reference offers 2.2 WAR for Stassi’s career, while FanGraphs notes enormous defensive contributions in 2018, 2019 and 2021 to arrive at a more generous 6.2 WAR.

With the acquisition, the White Sox outrighted reliever Edgar Navarro to clear room on the 40-man roster. There will be another move still to be made, as the Erick Fedde signing has not yet been made official.
