2024 South Side Sox Top Prospect No. 71: Jonah Scolaro

Look out, this flexible swingman is trending upward

Jonah Scolaro

The White Sox signed this Florida State alum as an undrafted free agent in July 2022 after he pitched briefly for the High Point Rockers of the Atlantic League. Scolaro pitched parts of five seasons out of the Seminoles bullpen (including the shortened 2020 season). He was a Cape Cod League All-Star in the summer of 2021 before finishing his amateur career with his best season in Tallahassee. In his Seminoles swan song, Scolaro posted a 3.25 ERA and a 4.35 FIP with a slider that induced a massive 50% whiff rate and a miniscule .133 BAA.

There’s not a lot of velo from Scolaro’s fastball, but it has above average ride. That slider (along with a changeup for right-handed hitters) creates an arsenal with some intriguing qualities.

As a pro, Scolaro has been able to maintain a lofty strikeout rate, albeit with less control. He finished 2022 with a 34% strikeout rate at Kannapolis and Winston-Salem, then maintained that rate with improved control through his initial 2023 assignment back to Winston-Salem. This prompted a promotion to Double-A, where Scolaro was utilized as a multi-inning reliever. His K-BB% in Birmingham was essentially cut in half, but he was still able to finish with a 3.72 ERA over 55 2⁄3 innings.

Scolaro will likely open 2024 back in Birmingham, but his flexibility could see him possibly starting in Charlotte. His eventual upside in Chicago is as a front-end bullpen/swingman arm.
