2024 South Side Sox Top Prospect No. 70: Luis Rodriguez

How does 7.5 Ks per walk suit you? Give this guy more innings!

Luis Rodriguez

Right-Handed Relief Pitcher
6´2´´
181 pounds
Age: 20
2023 High Level DSL (Rookie)
Age relative to high level +0.4 years
SSS rank among all right-handed relievers in the system 8
Overall 2023 stats 2-1 ⚾️ 15 games (5 finishes) ⚾️ 33 IP ⚾️ 3.55 ERA ⚾️ 1.152 WHIP ⚾️ 45 K ⚾️ 6 BB

The White Sox signed the then 19-year-old Luis Rodriguez out of Barquisimeto, Venezuela on May 1, 2023 before they sent him to the DSL. There, Rodriguez put up very solid numbers. A 3.55 ERA is nice, but his 2.46 FIP backed it up. He struck out just under a third of the hitters he faced while walking just 4%, for 7.5 K/BB. Plus, Rodriguez also only surrendered one home run in the 33 innings he threw as part of his professional debut.

Rodriguez, who appeared solely as a reliever in the Dominican, produced results over multi-inning stints (about 2 2⁄3 innings per outing) that warrant a shot to start. He threw 245 pitches in 2023, and 212 of them were for strikes. That’s an absurd 87% strike rate. (For context, the major league average is 63%.)

Rodriguez’s Baseball Cube player ratings
K/BB 99
Walks 98
Strikeouts 89
vsPower 43
Hittable 43

Rodriguez’s performance demands an expanded role in 2024. If sticking as a swingman/long reliever, he’ll be shipped Stateside to put his initial success to the test against better and more experienced competition. If transitioning to a starting role, he might get one more year in the DSL to adjust.
