He sometimes went by Chuck. I’m pretty sure his mom called him that.

But most people, including me, called him Chico. It was a nickname given to him by a coach he had while playing ball in the Markham Boys League. My dad was a shortstop, and this coach likened his play to that of former White Sox shortstop and four-time All-Star Chico Carrasquel.

I have often said that my two sisters and I love baseball because Chico loved baseball.

I also think he probably didn’t know what on earth to do with three little girls. He wasn’t a tea-party-and-play-dress-up kind of dude. I have to imagine that at some point early on, he decided it was best to just stick with what he knew.

When I was growing up and playing softball, he was the best coach I ever had.

He was dedicated. When I told him I wanted to learn how to pitch, he didn’t have a clue on how to do that. So, he found and borrowed a book, Xeroxed the hell out of it, and taught himself the mechanics so that he could teach them to me.

He was inventive. So that I could learn to defend my position and stay safe, he created a drill where I would have to get on one knee and throw a rubber softball against the brick wall of our house as hard as I could — from less than 10 feet away. I don’t know if my defense was Gold Glove-caliber, but then again, I never lost any teeth because my glove wasn’t fast enough to stop a line drive that was headed for my face.

He was innovative. He made me a weighted softball to warm up with so that come first pitch, my fastball would have a little extra pop. You can buy those at Dick’s Sporting Goods now. I think they’re weighted with actual weights these days, but back then, mine was weighted by a couple dozen drywall nails he had hammered into the ball.

Chico with my nephew — his only grandson. Looks like he’s teaching him about defensive shifts.

Chico died on January 4. He was buried with three baseballs — the ones we had given him as a Father’s Day gift years ago. One ball for each of his three grandchildren, with their tiny baby handprints inked onto them.

Everything I know about the game, I learned from him. And just about every life lesson he gave was taught through the lens of baseball. Therefore, in memory and deep honor of my father, I present to you “Life and Baseball according to Chico Johnson.”

Lesson One: If you practice a little, you’ll get a little better. If you practice a lot, you’ll get a lot better.
He pushed me — hard — to practice as often as I could. He used to keep one of those black-and-white marbled composition books where he’d track how many pitches I would throw in a day. His goal was always between 100 and 200 pitches, but there was one fall day when I threw over 800. (Don’t worry, my arm didn’t fall off. Softball pitchers aren’t out there having to get Tommy John surgeries — our delivery is a natural motion of the arm.) I remember we took a break about halfway, and he made me my favorite lunch. Which, as a 10-year-old, was Chef Boyardee ravioli. (Don’t judge me.)

He talked about that day for a long time.

He’d also log days I didn’t practice when he thought I should have. Those days have big ol’ zeros next to them.

Luckily, his pushing me to practice never felt oppressive. I loved playing too much — it never felt like work.

Lesson Two: Don’t spend your time complaining. Spend your time improving.
Chico hated it when I’d make excuses. If I walked a bunch of batters because it was raining and I couldn’t get a good grip on the ball, he’d quickly remind me that the opposing pitcher had to pitch in the rain, too, and it didn’t seem to bother her too much. “If you don’t like losing,” he’d say, “then get better.”

Lesson Three: Respect your opponents.
This was Chico’s version of “speak softly and carry a big stick.” He hated softball cheers that would disparage the other team in any way. (I remember there being one cheer about pushing the other team into a river that he forbade us to sing.)

Just because he wanted us to be overwhelmingly and undeniably better than they were didn’t mean that we got to make them feel bad about it. He wanted our talent to speak for itself.

As he once told me, “Trash talk only makes you look trashy.”

Lesson Four: If you’re going to do something, you may as well try to be the best at it.
Under my dad’s tutelage, I got pretty damn good at softball. I quickly outgrew the in-house league where I started and transitioned to travel ball when I was about 12 years old. I excelled through high school and eventually received a scholarship to play ball in college.

Even so, Chico would never let my success go to my head. When I graduated, he made a scrapbook full of photos and newspaper clippings from my years of playing. Page 1 of that scrapbook was a local newspaper’s recap of a game that I had pitched — and lost — to a divisional rival. He told me he wanted that to be the first thing in the book because “no matter how good you are, there’s always someone who’s better than you. You should always be trying to catch her.”

He always wanted me to try more. To work harder. To lead by example. And to never quit.

I loved my dad. I’ll probably walk around with a Chico-shaped hole in my heart for the rest of my life. Thank you for letting me tell you about him. I hope his lessons help you like they helped me.

Oh, and remember that scrapbook I told you about? Do you know what was also in there? A torn-out page from the composition book where he logged my practices.

It was the page from my 818-pitch day.

So much so that I was compelled to make that the subject of a new feature for South Side Sox called Second Hand Embarrassment.

In each episode, I’ll rank the recent performance of the White Sox according to how embarrassed (or not embarrassed) it made me feel as a fan. In Episode 1, I take an extended look at the 2023 season.

Although no one is really sure why

In a move that is as disappointing as it was expected, the Chicago White Sox have officially named Chris Getz their new general manager and senior vice president. The insular, lazy, and questionable hire comes after what I can only assume must have been a grueling days-long search after long-time front office leaders Ken Williams and Rick Hahn were summarily dismissed from their positions on August 22.

OFFICIAL: Chris Getz has been named senior vice president/general manager of the Chicago White Sox. pic.twitter.com/MPjlDuI7p6
— Chicago White Sox (@whitesox) August 31, 2023

Getz began his MLB career with the White Sox after being drafted in 2005. He spent one season of note with the big-league club in 2009, where he amassed a 73 OPS+. From there, Getz was sent packing to the Kansas City Royals for one year of infielder Mark Teahen. After he retired from playing in 2014, Getz spent some with the Royals organization before being hired as director of player development for the White Sox in 2016. He has additionally served as assistant general manager since 2021.

During his tenure, Getz presided over the steep decline of the minor-league system he was tasked with developing. The White Sox went from being named the top-ranked farm system by MLB Pipeline in 2017 to the fourth-worst to begin the 2023 season.

As if the baseball itself wasn’t bad enough, the more egregious and unforgivable incidents were happening off the field. Getz was at the helm in 2019 when Double-A manager Omar Vizquel was let go for what was cited as player development reasons, and also in 2021 when Triple-A manager Wes Helms was relieved of his duties mid-season. Fans would soon learn that there may have been a much more sinister explanation for the managerial changes, as a 2021 lawsuit alleged that Vizquel sexually assaulted a batboy during the 2019 season. Helms was also named in the suit, as the victim contended that the Charlotte manager was one of six people in the organization with knowledge of the situation and that he openly mocked him.

In fact Getz, rather than opt to avoid comment on the Vizquel dismissal, instead lauded the alleged sexual predator:

This is from Chris Getz on Omar: “Listen, Omar, ultra-talented player, very good instructor, created a good environment for our players.

These situations must be what chairman Jerry Reinsdorf was referring to when he released a statement today that said, “Chris brings a wealth of knowledge and experience within our organization to this role. Most importantly, he knows our players, both at the major league level and in our system, knows our staff, and is familiar with all the aspects of our baseball operations department.”

The move was met by many fans with much disdain, being seen by some as not only a poor baseball decision but also one that supports the notion that the front office at 35th and Shields cares very little about the health and success of the organization. It’s fair to wonder if promoting from within was a wise move for an organization often criticized for insularity.

The White Sox, having earned exactly zero benefit of the doubt, certainly have their work cut out for them.

Not that I trust them to do it.

Two wins in a row? Is that allowed?

After a week of record-breaking, oppressive heat, tonight was a picture-perfect summer night in Chicago. Likewise, after a week of necessary but soul-crushing white flag deadline trades, the Chicago White Sox put on a clinic in a 7-2 win against the Cleveland Guardians.

And, boy, was it fun.

This game had everything.

The Offense

Fans didn’t have to wait long for fireworks tonight. The highlight of tonight’s game came in the bottom of the first inning. Team barometer Tim Anderson has been swinging a hot bat as of late, hitting .350 since the All-Star break, but the long ball has continued to elude him. Tonight, he finally broke through. After a 379-day, 96-game drought, Anderson hit his first home run of the season, a 429-foot no-doubter to left field. Listen — I know the team is 20 games worse than .500, but tell me this dugout celebration isn’t balm for the White Sox fan’s soul:

“It took me long enough to get it,” Anderson joked of his blast during his postgame interview. Hey, Tim, as long as you keep hitting them, we’re all good.

The offense didn’t stop there. There was only one player in the lineup tonight who did not have a hit — Jake Burger — and even he contributed to the cause, walking twice with a run scored. In total, the South Siders scattered a combined 12 hits tonight, including Andrew Vaughn’s 13th home run of the season, adding two insurance runs in the sixth inning.

The hit parade was nice, but it was equally nice to see some plate discipline. The Good Guys amassed six walks tonight, and ironically, none of them belonged to White Sox Twitter’s famed Moneyball GIF subject Yasmani Grandal.

The Defense

Despite a third baseman playing second and a second baseman playing left field, the South Siders threw some serious leather tonight. Zach Remillard set the tone, making a phenomenal grab in left field and doubling off Cleveland’s speedy leadoff hitter Steven Kwan. (Well, at least that’s what the box score says. Guardians manager Terry Francona, ejected from the game after the play, might disagree.)

The offense was great, the defense was special, and while those are the things that’ll tip the scoreboard in your favor, tonight’s game had a third element that was off-the-charts.

The vibes. The vibes were back tonight. The team was more relaxed than I’d seen them all season. That comes with winning, I suppose. Do yourselves a favor and scroll back up to look at the dugout’s reaction to Anderson’s home run.

It was a great night on the South Side. Love is real, baseball is fun, and the White Sox won.

But who says we still can’t have some fun? There’s a game to play tonight!

The Sox (42-63), riding the wave of last night’s 3-0 victory (and, yes, a one-game win streak constitutes a “wave” this season), will host the second-place Cleveland Guardians (52-52) on the South Side tonight as they try to get closer to their first series win since June.

What happens when a baseball writer can’t watch baseball?

Guaranteed Rate Field opened up the 2023 season on April 3.

I was there, in Lot B, attending a tailgate party hosted by some friends of mine. I was in my element. The sun was trying to peek through the overcast clouds, and I filled my lungs with deep breaths of spring air, tinged by the smell of grilled onions. I was reunited with — and introduced to — many folks in my White Sox Twitter family. Sure, the White Sox lost, and Michael Kopech looked absolutely horrible, giving up what seemed to be about 52 home runs.

But on that day, it didn’t matter that much to me. Baseball was back.

April 4 was an off-day.

April 5? Well, that’s when it goes off the rails. At least, it did for me. I still struggle with where the line is on what or how much to share publicly, so you’ll forgive my vagueness. But on April 5, one of my children had a medical emergency. Suffice to say, I didn’t watch the game that day.

Or the next game.

Or the one after that.

And none of them, really, until recently. Things at home have improved to the point that I’m able to watch a game here and there. (Thank you all for your sincere concern, shoulders to cry on, and acts of love, generosity, and service. My White Sox Twitter friends have been my angels throughout this nightmare.)

Care package from my SSS family.

On the nights I’m able to sit down and watch a game, I’m watching a team I barely recognize. Missing almost two months of a baseball season is very disorienting. Why is Tim Anderson’s OPS+ only 57? What do you mean Eloy Jiménez had an emergency appendectomy? Who the hell is Jesse Scholtens? They DFA’d José Ruiz and Jake Diekman? (Well, OK, that last one is kind of funny.)

As things at home slowly improve, my desire to write is also slowly returning. But where would I even start? I would love to dig through game logs and stats and try and educate myself on what parts of the machine are breaking down and why, but dear reader, I just don’t have that kind of time or energy right now. I’m running on fumes over here. Even if I could find the time, I couldn’t guarantee that I’d be able to watch future games with much consistency. I mean, I’d probably be able to get enough on my fastball to pump out a few semi-informed takes on Twitter, but not enough to analyze the team with any authority.

I feel like I’m at an impasse: What happens when a baseball writer can’t watch baseball?

On the one hand, it’s been kind of nice to live in the moment. It feels like a vacation. A long weekend for my baseball brain. For example, I didn’t even know how many games behind the team was in the division until I looked it up to write this piece. It’s been a pleasant change of pace, especially having weathered the decidedly unpleasant last few seasons on the South Side. It becomes less about Rick Hahn’s Mega Bullpen debacle and more about sitting in your backyard with a drink and Len and DJ on the call. It’s less about squandered contention windows and more about high-fiving your friend when Romy González doubles in a few runs to give the Sox the lead.

Maybe this is an inevitable and natural evolution of my fandom, or maybe this is all it ever should have been.

I suppose there’s a lesson there. Baseball, after all, is a game, and games are meant to be fun — even when you’re losing. And the great thing about 162-game seasons is that even during the worst of years, you still get to win some of the time. Things don’t stay dark forever.

In Wednesday’s 6-0 win against the Cleveland Guardians, the Michael Kopech we saw was very different from the one we saw during the home opener on April 3. He looked like a whole new pitcher. It seems like he is on a much better path now.

I can relate.

Hey everyone, you still shouldn’t look at the tire-fire roster, here’s our FREE STUFF!

About a month ago, the White Sox released their list of 2023 promotions, and like any good fan desperate to be enthused and writer searching for subject matter, I dove right in.
