Teams continue to show interest in the South Side ace, but Chris Getz doesn’t seem ready to deal him away

Dylan Cease has been one of the hottest items on the Stove this offseason, and rightfully so. He’s sitting at a career 3.83 ERA, has a second-place Cy Young finish, and usually finishes in the Top 5-10 in terms of strikeouts. Plus: That slider sure is nasty. White Sox GM Chris Getz, however, has not found a trade that is enough to justify giving up one of the top pitchers in the game. Recently, trade talks between the White Sox and Yankees have begun to heat up, but as of now, we still have no deal.

Earlier this week, USA Today’s Bob Nightengale also reported that New York is still working to bolster their starting rotation alongside Gerrit Cole (the reigning American League Cy Young winner), Carlos Rodón, Nestor Cortés, and newly acquired Marcus Stroman — especially since the latter three all struggled with injuries last year, and Cease is still in his prime at 28 years old. While the Yankees could make a splash and add two Cy Young winners to their pitching staff, as Blake Snell is still available, they are looking for a cheaper option who will still make them competitive in a tough AL East and to not exceed the Competitive Balance Tax.

There have been several “mock trades” floating around, and even Baseball Trade Values has featured a trade between these teams on its homepage for the past week.

Naturally, I had to dig into this trade a bit.

There seems to be a positive reaction to this trade for Yankees fans, but White Sox fans (myself included) are likely more wary of a (potentially risky) prospect-heavy trade without a near MLB-ready player.

Nightingale also notes in his article that any trade of Cease will have to include New York’s top prospect, outfielder Spencer Jones. As you’d expect, the Yankees aren’t keen on sending Jones to the South Side, essentially gambling that Cease performs to the level he did in 2022. The good news for us Sox fans is that Getz seems to be pretty firm on what the return would need to be for a trade to work out.

And there’s certainly a reason why the Yankees don’t want to let Jones go — especially after blasting a home run in his first spring training at-bat and being on fire over his first three games. In seven at-bats, he’s gotten five hits (including the home run), walked once, and struck out just one time, with a strong .714/.778/1.143 slash line. Sure, it’s only seven at-bats in spring, but at 6´6´´ with that kind of power? It’s almost Aaron Judge level, but as a lefty who can also steal 40 bases a year.

The Players

Now, if the Yankees aren’t going to dish out Jones, let’s see some other options presented in the above hypothetical trade:

Roderick Arias (Shortstop)
Roderick Arias, another of the top Yankees prospects – listed as New York’s No. 4 on FanGraphs — is the highest-rated piece of this mock trade. He was signed from the international draft in 2022 as an 18-year-old from the Dominican Republic. While he struggled his first year in the DSL, he greatly improved in 2023, slashing .267/.423/.505 with six homers and 26 RBIs across 27 games in the FCL. He certainly shows a lot of promise, but his injury struggles in his first two seasons caused him to be sidelined quite a bit, not yet playing a full season in the minors.

For me, when I read about his injuries, alarm bells immediately started going off given how prevalent injuries have been for the White Sox over the last several years. Another thing that Chicago would need to consider would be that Colson Montgomery is currently slated to be the South Side starting shortstop within the next couple of years, which begs the question of how Arias would fit into that equation. Could he potentially shift over to second base and finally solve that position? Of course, this would be several years down the line, and also might not even be an option, but I’ll never stop dreaming of a full-time, quality starting second baseman.

Everson Pereira (Outfielder)
Everson Pereira was a player who had been called up to the big leagues during the final weeks of last season after the Yankees were eliminated from playoff contention, and as our friends over at Pinstripe Alley put it, his small sample (27 games) was “unappetizing at best.” Woof.

In his short stint after being called up, Pereira’s slash line was nothing to write home about (.151/.233/.194) while also striking out at a brutal 43% clip. His performance in the minors, however, was much more impressive. He began the season in Double-A, where Pereira played the majority of his games, achieving a .907 OPS, before being promoted to Triple-A, where his batting average increased alongside a .937 OPS. He played 11 fewer games in Triple-A, but he hit nearly the same amount of home runs (eight compared to 10 in Double-A) and certainly proved that he can play at a higher level.

Pereira will have to show promise that he can work through his high strikeout rate while adjusting to MLB pitching, because at this point the last thing the White Sox need would be another outfielder floating up and down to Triple-A all season, like Danny Mendick in 2022.

Clayton Beeter (Starting Pitcher)
Beeter is a 25-year-old righthander drafted in 2020 and has so far only pitched in the minors. In 131 ⅔ innings over 27 games (26 starts) in 2023, he achieved an overall 3.62 ERA spanning across Double- and Triple-A. He struggled a bit more with the enhanced competition in Triple-A, earning a 4.94 ERA compared to 2.08 in Double-A. However, he also struck out 13 more batters in Triple-A, showing that he certainly can get players to swing and miss at an efficient rate. Plus, there’s time to develop Beeter, and he’s already seen a near 3 mph increase on his fastball, averaging closer to 96 compared to 93 last year.

Ben Rice (Catcher/First Baseman)
Ben Rice is a somewhat interesting piece of this trade, except for the fact that the White Sox likely do not need another 1B/DH type. The difference maker here is that Rice is a lefty power bat who tends to not strike out a lot — something the Sox could certainly use. In 48 Double-A games, he mashed 16 homers and posted a highly-efficient 1.049 OPS. This kind of production from a catcher would be unheard of from the White Sox since Yasmani Grandal went off in 2021.

Rice is expected to play the majority of the year in Triple-A, so he could be ready for the big leagues soon. For the South Siders, outside of Edgar Quero, there isn’t much promise for catchers within the White Sox farm system, especially since Korey Lee struggled to make contact when he was called up in 2023.

Now, all that being said — do the White Sox make this deal? Although some of these players are exciting and show potential to be great, I say no. The White Sox aren’t competing this year, so it makes sense to sell high on Cease if the South Siders want to compete in coming years, but there’s no need to deal their ace away without getting as much as possible. Teams that are fighting for the playoffs might be a little more desperate in June and July, when Getz can get more bang for his buck if the situation presents itself.

Also, I REALLY don’t want him to go to the Yankees. Keeping the mustache is a necessity.

Other teams still need a pitcher that could potentially swoop in before the season begins. Cease’s contract is only $8 million in 2024, and some teams will be more than willing to spend that money — but are they willing to part ways with the top-rated prospects needed to make that happen?

The White Sox signed Venezuelan infielder Javier Mogollon to a $35,000 contract in January 2023, and he was a welcome addition to the DSL team that summer. Mogollon played both shortstop and second base for the DSL White Sox, but ultimately frequented second a bit more (27 of 47 total games). While it seems like he will be sticking around the right side majority of the time, he actually had a 1.000 fielding percentage at shortstop, and committed eight errors over at second (.922).

Mogollon doesn’t appear as a typical power hitter standing at (5´8´´, 160), but he showed he can slug the ball harder than most, finishing fourth among all DSL players with 10 home runs (165 at-bats). Slashing an impressive .315/.417/.582, Mogollon also finished in the DSL Top 10 in OPS (.999). He also showed solid discipline at the plate with just 28 strikeouts, a fairly respectable 16.9% strikeout rate — especially for a young player who seemingly has plenty of potential.

For another perspective on the monumental impact Mogollon made in his short pro debut, consider his ratings relative to peers, where no single number is lower than 76th percentile and a stunning six of seven are considered elite:

Mogollon’s Baseball Cube player ratings
RBIs 97
Hitting 93
Contact 92
Power 89
Runs 87
XBH 82
Speed 76

Mogollon is still very young, but he crushed the DSL. The move Stateside is delicate for any player, but the White Sox have to move him to Arizona in 2024 to see if they’ve found some gold.

Gil led the team in batting average and on-base percentage, slashing .340/.481/.517 in his 45 games played. His patience was shown not only within his efficient OBP metrics, but he also walked four more times than he struck out in 2023, at a 13% walk rate against an 11% strikeout. He also led the team in doubles (11), was tied for second with 33 RBIs, and blasted five homers in 147 at-bats.

Gil played all around the infield, focusing primarily on the corners, starting the most games at first base (24 of 45 games), posting a .990 fielding percentage, much stronger than his .824 over at third.

Gil’s Baseball Cube player ratings
Hitting 97
Contact 97
RBIs 91
Power 66
XBH 49
Speed 42
Runs 37

Do not adjust your set: Gil shares an identical name and home country, and nearly identical build with relief-pitcher DSL teammate Adrían Gil. Our Gil here could stick as an undersized first baseman, presuming he can continue to knock the stuffing out of the ball. But one objective in his already-challenging move Stateside to the ACL in 2024 will be to better master either the hot corner or, depending on his quicks, second base.

KBO MVP headed to the South Side

The Winter Meetings are in full swing in Nashville, and new GM Chris Getz has made it clear that starting pitching is a top priority for the club this offseason. As such, the White Sox signed righthander Erick Fedde to a two-year, $15 million deal in effort to stock a woefully incomplete starting rotation.

After trading Aaron Bummer to the Atlanta Braves for RHP Michael Soroka just a couple of weeks ago, this is the second move Getz has made to repair his broken rotation — an assignment made ever more urgent with Dylan Cease potentially on the move, as rumors and interests pipe up from around the league.

Right-hander Erick Fedde and the Chicago White Sox are in agreement on a two-year, $15 million contract, sources tell ESPN. Fedde, 30, went 20-6 with a 2.00 ERA for the NC Dinos in the KBO, where he was named MVP this year.
— Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) December 5, 2023

Fedde spent six years with the Washington Nationals organization, where he posted an underwhelming 5.41 ERA spanning 102 games. After moving in and out of the majors, he eventually landed with the NC Dinos of the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO), where he won the Choi-Dong Award in 2023 — the KBO’s version of the Cy Young.

After brandishing an impressive 2.00 ERA across 180 1⁄3 innings, Fedde finished the season with a 0.954 WHIP, 20-6 record (obviously the most important stat to judge a pitcher in 2023!), and 209 strikeouts — 45 more than the next best pitcher in the league.

Many fans will likely not be impressed by the signing, but time at the Winter Meetings to see what moves are in store for the South Siders, as the rumor mills swirl. While it may be a bit of an experiment, newfound success in the KBO could establish some more confidence in Fedde to be a serviceable back-end of the rotation pitcher for a White Sox team that is clearly in a rebuild without calling it one.

After declining the option of long-time South Side shortstop Tim Anderson, many were left wondering who would take over before prospect Colson Montgomery is ready for the majors. Sox fans finally have their answer, pending a physical, of course.

Paul DeJong played for three separate teams in 2023, beginning the season on the IL with the St. Louis Cardinals before being sent to Toronto at the trade deadline. The Blue Jays designated DeJong for assignment just a few weeks later, and he was immediately picked up by the San Francisco Giants … until they, too, released him on September 21.

DeJong’s performance definitely contributed to all of those DFAs, having a less-than-stellar 2023, slashing .207/.327/.262 (yikes) across all three teams. He rode the struggle bus hard with the Blue Jays, coming in at a brutal -80 WRC+ in 44 plate appearances. His career numbers are a bit friendlier, slashing .229/.299/.417 and a much more respectable .716 OPS. Is this the flashiest signing of the offseason? Certainly not. However, Chris Getz is proving to fans he is serious about being active in the market, and there are still several holes to fill on this roster.

While Paul DeJong isn’t from Naperville, let the record show that he joins his middle-infield counterpart Nicky Lopez as an Illinois native, attending high school in Antioch and college at Illinois State University. We can expect more moves to come from the South Side as trade rumors heat up, including the possibility of Dylan Cease being shipped out to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Rangers look to take control at home, while the Diamondbacks are hoping to tie things up down in Arizona

The ALCS is all tied up at two as the Houston Astros and Texas Rangers duke it out in game five — at 4:07pm on FS1! Justin Verlander will make his third postseason start, carrying a 3.51 career postseason ERA, certainly not bad for an old man! His extensive postseason experience has certainly shaped him for these moments, but I’m sure I speak for many when I say I’d be fine if the Astros ended their run this weekend.

Jordan Montgomery will also make his third start, and his postseason experience is a much smaller sample size — just these two 2023 starts. He’s given up double the hits as Verlander has, but has also thrown for five more innings, at a 2.08 ERA.

Kyle Schwarber hit a moonshot on the first pitch he saw, setting the tone for the Phillies the rest of the game.
The Rangers and Diamondbacks look to remain undefeated while Philadelphia and Houston attempt to snag a win at home

The Texas Rangers sprung ahead with a 1-0 series lead against the Houston Astros on Sunday, looking to keep their win streak rolling in Game 2 Monday afternoon. On the east coast, the Philadelphia Phillies host the Arizona Diamondbacks in Game 1 of the NLCS in tonight’s playoff nightcap.

ALCS Game 2: Texas Rangers at Houston Astros

It’s hard to find a hotter team right now than the Texas Rangers, who have yet to lose a game this postseason, with five of six taking place on the road. Only twice has their been teams that achieved this level of dominance — and not since the World Series-winning 2005 Chicago White Sox. Jordan Montgomery led Texas to a 2-0 victory in the ALCS opener on Sunday, and Nathan Eovaldi will look to exude his postseason expertise in Game 2.

In 13 career postseason games, Eovaldi has a 6-3 record, a 2.70 ERA, and has recorded 56 strikeouts in 56 2⁄3 innings — certainly not bad at all. He has reached or completed the seventh inning in both of his 2023 playoff starts, and has only allowed two runs on 11 hits. Eovaldi has a small sample size against the Astros this year — with a 4.32 ERA in 8 1⁄3 innings, allowing four earned runs. With the hot bats of Corey Seager, Adolis García, and Evan Carter, ideally the Rangers can provide the offensive support to take a two-game advantage up north to Arlington.

The Astros are well-versed in the ALCS, this being their seventh consecutive appearance and all, so no matter what happens, you really can’t ever count them out — especially with offensive weapons such as Yordan Álvarez and hot-hitting South Side legend, José Abreu.

Framber Valdez makes his second playoff start, and is hoping to at the very least perform better than his last outing against the Minnesota Twins, where he took a 6-2 loss, giving up five earned on seven hits. Walks were the main problem in his ALDS outing, though this was more of an outlier on his 2023 performance, considering he’s had an efficient 7.1% walk rate.

NLCS Game 1: Arizona Diamondbacks at Philadelphia Phillies

In the NLCS series opener, the Zac Gallen and Zach Wheeler rubber match is sure to be must-see TV. Both have been great this postseason, and in his first two starts, Zac Gallen has posted a 3.18 ERA and 1.32 WHIP in 11 1⁄3 innings, and if he can limit free bases for the Phillies, he’s sure to be a tough match for the Philadelphia offense. Gallen finished the 2023 season with a 3.47 ERA, and sixth on the strikeout leader list with 220, a 26% strikeout rate.

The D-backs have had incredible run support on the offensive side of the ball, with the likely NL ROY winner, Corbin Carroll, putting up a truly remarkable performance slashing .412/.565/.824. THE MAN IS SLUGGING .824!!! Ketel Marte and Tommy Pham have also been essential for the first two series, both batting .318, and combining for 14 hits and 10 runs scored.

Zack Wheeler, however, has been outstanding. In his first two starts (13 innings), he has given up just two runs (2.08 ERA) and a 0.69 WHIP. He’s struck out 18 batters, averaging more than one K an inning, compared to just one walk across both starts. In his two regular-season starts against the D-backs, Wheeler has a 3.00 ERA from 12 hits and four earned runs in 12 innings. Arizona has been unstoppable so far in the postseason, scoring at least four runs in all five of their five postseason games, so Wheeler will have some work to do tonight.

Trea Turner and Bryce Harper have been insane in the playoffs, putting up incredible offensive numbers with a 1.455 OPS and 1.381 OPS, respectively, in 52 combined plate appearances. And let’s not forget Nick Castellanos demolishing home runs left and right — smashing four in the last two games. The Diamondbacks could possibly meet their match tonight, especially in an electric atmosphere in Philly.

Realmuto bomb in the third — but it was the Braves who would ultimately claw back and win the game, 5-4. Although he ended up getting the win, it wasn’t the best start for Max Fried, who gave up the same amount of runs as Zack Wheeler (three), but he did it with three more pitches and in two fewer innings, unable to match Wheeler’s 10 Ks.

Wheeler was dealing Monday night, taking a no-hitter into the sixth until Ozzie Albies finally broke it up to get Atlanta on the board, assisted by a rare Trea Turner error. A pair of two-run blasts from Travis d’Arnaud and Austin Riley in the seventh and eighth innings, and Bryce Harper being too aggressive on the basepaths were exactly what the Braves needed to earn the much-needed win. This NLDS will now head to Philadelphia with the series tied at one.

J.D. Martinez launched a solo shot in the fourth in effort to ignite the L.A. offense, but Lourdes Gurriel Jr. answered back the next inning with a blast of his own, making him 2-for-4 on the day with two RBIs.

Both bullpens were threatened with bases-loaded situations several times, but outside of one L.A. run sneaking across the plate in the bottom of the sixth, every jame was escaped. Old White Sox friend Joe Kelly, even made an appearance, giving up two hits and striking out three in his 1 2⁄3 innings. The D-backs head back to Arizona with a 2-0 series lead, looking to sweep their way into the NLCS.
