The Good Things of Baseball

26

It's from TwinkieTown and #1 on the list is about the Cubs, but somehow I still enjoyed it. 1. The Cubs still play in the afternoons. Other teams do too, on Sundays and on Wednesdays or Thursdays when they want to get out of town and get on a plane to the next city, but the Cubs still do it pretty regularly. And in the afternoons, maybe you have a little TV in the office that the boss let you hook up a while ago, or maybe you have a subscription that lets you watch the game on your computer. You turn on the game and there's Wrigley, same as it was when you were a kid and you were home sick from school. Rich folks in the stands, drunk college kids putting the make on each other in the bleachers. The Cubs are losing; the Cubs are always losing.

Brooks Boyer defends the Sox 2012 slogan, "Appreciate the Game" in today's Crain's Chicago. Apparently Robin Ventura was the inspiration. Sadly, SSS is snubbed in favor of White Sox Interactive for snarky fan commentary.

Unless I missed one, the White Sox have exactly ONE in the Top 101, and he comes in at #81. Read it and weep.

Bill James: Open Letter To The Hall Of Fame

5

I hope you understand that I would never sacrifice my reputation by arguing that a player belongs in the Hall of Fame if I did not sincerely believe this to be true. Yes, Dwight Evans works for the Red Sox, and I work for the Red Sox, and I'm not saying this is not relevant to why I am writing, but … I wouldn't argue that Dwight Evans had a Hall of Fame quality career if the kinds of analysis that I do all the time did not show this to be true. It's not really that I wouldn't; I couldn't. I've spent years explaining to the public every step I take in evaluating a player. If I didn't follow those steps, the people who have read my stuff over the years would know immediately that I wasn't playing by the rules, and they would tear me a newbie over it right away.

Keith Law says our minor league system sucks - hard.

So we are at the bottom of his list. And I guess we are not very close to 29 either.
