White Sox Minor League Update: Rest of season

Scores, news and more from around the White Sox farm system as the minor league playoffs begin

For the White Sox' full-season minor league affiliates, the regular season wraps up today, and only one of them will advance to the postseason.

  • Charlotte: 74-69; missed postseason.
  • Birmingham: 69-69; missed postseason.
  • Winston-Salem: 74-63; clinched second-half division title, opens three-game series with Myrtle Beach on Wednesday.
  • Kannapolis: 64-73; missed postseason.

The Great Falls Voyagers have two games remaining in their regular season, and both games have playoff implications. The Voyagers are a half-game behind Missoula for the Pioneer League North lead, but more importantly, they're tied with Billings at 18-18, which is their opponent for the final two games.

If I'm reading the rules correctly, the Voyagers can only control their own postseason destiny if they win both games. A split will leave them tied with Billings, of course, and if a 19-19 record is good enough to tie for the second-half lead, then the first tiebreaker is record in head-to-head matchups. Billings has won 8 of 11 such games, so in this sense, it's a double-elimination tournament for the Mustangs, and single-elimination for Great Falls.

However, if Missoula takes two of its remaining three games to win the title for both halves, then Great Falls can still advance with a split, since the wild card then goes to the team with the best overall record. The Voyagers currently hold a half-game edge over Billings (35-37 to 35-38).

Sunday's box scores will appear below shortly.
