Yoan Moncada and the Charlotte Knights put together a highlight reel

We’ve been tracking quite closely Yoan Moncada’s exploits at the plate, but he’s been playing a pretty decent second base. His defense strikes me as firmly in between Yolmer Sanchez and Micah Johnson — he’s not the most fluid of defenders, but he has enough softness to his hands to make use of his physical tools when in position to do so.

Here he is on Saturday turning one helluva double play.

And he wasn’t the only one throwing leather. Here’s Nicky Delmonico making a catch on the tarp behind third base, and making a diving stab to start a 5-4-3 double play with Moncada on the quick pivot.

Moncada also made this play on the other side of the bag...

... although it probably should’ve been an infield single. There’s no replay in Triple-A.

  • Jake Peter was also 1-for-4.
  • Courtney Hawkins wore the golden sombrero.
  • Nick Basto went 1-for-3 with a walk and a strikeout.
  • Trey Michalczewski went 0-for-3 with a walk.
  • Keon Barnum homered twice and drove in six. That seems worth a mention.
  • Alfredo Gonzalez was 0-for-4 with a strikeout.
  • Matt Cooper: 5.2 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 8 K

Kannapolis 10, Hickory 9 (12 innings)

  • Mitch Roman went 1-for-5 with a walk, a stolen base and three strikeouts while playing shortstop for the first time this year (he committed two errors).
  • Jameson Fisher was 1-for-7 with three strikeouts.
  • Alec Hansen: 3.2 IP, 7 H, 6 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 3 K. Hickory also was 8-for-8 in stolen bases off the pairing of Hansen and Wilfredo Rodriguez.
