I’m in Charlotte, watching the Knights lay waste to the Norfolk Tides pitching staff with six homers, including a grand slam from Danny Hayes (see above). Be prepared for a few posts over the next week. Meanwhile, Michael Kopech’s line made me laugh out loud.

Top prospects at a glance

  • Yoan Moncada: 1-for-5, HR.
  • Lucas Giolito: 4.1 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, 3 HBPs.
  • Michael Kopech: 4.1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 10 K, 1 HR, 1 HBP
  • Luis Alexander Basabe: 0-for-4, BB, SB.
  • Zack Collins: 1-for-3, HR, BB, 2 K, PO.
  • Dane Dunning: 6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 8 K.

Charlotte 15, Norfolk 5

  • Adam Engel went 1-for-5 with two strikeouts (both looking on full counts; he didn’t care for the calls).
  • Yoan Moncada went 1-for-5 with his first Charlotte homer.
  • Willy Garcia was 3-for-4 with a homer and a walk.
  • Nicky Delmonico was a double short of the cycle on a 3-for-4 night. He also walked.
  • Danny Hayes went 3-for-5 with a grand slam and a two-run shot. He struck out once.
  • Lucas Giolito: 4.1 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 4 K. He looked good through three, but told me that he stopped finishing his pitches as the count piled up, resulting in three HBPs. Fastball was in the low 90s.

Birmingham 8, Jackson 7 (10 innings)

  • Eddy Alvarez went 1-for-5 with a strikeout.
  • Trey Michalczewski, 1-for-4 with a walk, strikeout and stolen base.
  • Courtney Hawkins is getting whiplash: 0-for-5 with three strikeouts.
  • Nick Basto was 2-for-4 with a strikeout and an HBP.
  • Alfredo Gonzalez went 3-for-4 with a double and a walk.
  • Michael Kopech: 4.1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 10 K, 1 HR, 1 HBP. That’s 10 of 13 outs by strikeouts, in other words.

Buies Creek 9, Winston-Salem 4

  • Luis Alexander Basabe went 0-for-4 with a walk and a stolen base.
  • Johan Cruz, 2-for-5 with a double and a strikeout.
  • Alex Call went 1-for-5, and 1-for-2 on the basepaths.
  • Zack Collins hit his first homer. He also drew a walk, struck out twice and was picked off.
  • Aaron Schnurbusch was 0-for-4 with a strikeout.

Lakewood 8, Kannapolis 4 (10 innings)

  • Joel Booker went 1-for-5.
  • Jameson Fisher, 1-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base.
  • Dane Dunning made a strong entrance: 6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 8 K.
