In previous conversations about Nicky Delmonico, the only on-paper performance-related reason I could see for not calling him up was the fact that he hadn’t had even one standout game away from Charlotte’s BB&T Ballpark.
He entered Thursday’s action hitting a respectable .284/.366/.431, but he did all the damage in one place:
- Home: .404/.500/.632 over 68 PA
- Away: .169/.222/.237 over 63 PA
The season was early enough that such a severe split could only be the product of extreme clustering. At the same time, the sample is getting large enough to be a little weird. Putting it another way:
- Home: Nine multi-hit games out of 14.
- Away: One multi-hit game out of 16 (15 starts).
There are two ways to even these out, and Delmonico started with the fun way in Louisville, going 3-for-4 with a double and a triple. He’s now hitting 206/.265/.317 in the road, so he boosted his OPS by 123 points. That’s not a bad dent in a day.
