Zack Burdi keeps stringing together zeroes

While Gregory Infante received the call to the majors as a temporary extra reliever, Zack Burdi is nearing the point where he should get a chance to establish himself in the White Sox bullpen.

The Downers Grove Mustang posted his ninth consecutive scoreless outing on Monday for the save. During this stretch, he’s compiled this line: 11 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 18 K, 2 HBP and no extra-base hits.

Like Yoan Moncada, though, there is some Super Two consideration. It depends on whether the White Sox plan to give Burdi the ninth inning sooner in his career rather than later, because nothing inflates arbitration salaries quite like saves. The Sox put Addison Reed into the closing role shortly into his first full season, and the salary trajectory that resulted prompted them to deal him while they could get a prospect of note.

However, if the White Sox have other closers in mind for the foreseeable future, the specific timing of a promotion is less of a concern, because setup men just don’t get rewarded by the system the same way.
