North Carolina affiliates step up game with boss in Charlotte

BB&T Ballpark Jim Margalus / South Side Sox

Rick Hahn was in Charlotte Tuesday night, “catching up with the Triple-A prospects and staff” according to Colleen Kane. The natural leap is “Yoan Moncada promotion?”, which I’m sure is part of the assessment. It seems just as likely that this trip is more about the more pressing roster issues we discussed on Tuesday -- the lack of a left-handed semi-DH and the very wobbly fourth and fifth starters.

At any rate, the North Carolina affiliates stepped up their game by going 3-0, although Winston-Salem technically played in Virginia. Geography pedantry aside, it’s the kind of day that has allowed the White Sox to climb out of the cellar when it comes to organizational win percentage.

Top prospects at a glance

  • Yoan Moncada: 1-for-4, HR, BB, K
  • Carson Fulmer: 5.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 5 BB, 2 K
  • Luis Alexander Basabe: 1-for-4, K, CS
  • Zack Collins: 0-for-3, BB, K
  • Dane Dunning’s High-A debut: 5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K, 1 WP

Charlotte 8, Norfolk 3

  • Yoan Moncada went 1-for-4 with a homer, walk and strikeout.
  • Nicky Delmonico, 2-for-4 with two doubles.
  • Danny Hayes homered, singled and struck out twice.
  • Rymer Liriano was 0-for-4 with a strikeout.
  • Adam Engel, 1-for-3 with a homer. He was also caught stealing.
  • Carson Fulmer: 5.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 5 BB, 2 K
  • Cory Luebke made his debut: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K

  • Here’s Moncada taking the rehabbing Chris Tillman deep. Tillman gave up four homers in five innings:

Winston-Salem 1, Lynchburg 0

  • Luis Alexander Basabe went 1-for-4 with a strikeout. He was caught stealing.
  • Zack Collins, 0-for-3 with a walk and a strikeout, but he threw out three baserunners.
  • Johan Cruz walked once and struck out thrice.
  • Dane Dunning’s High-A debut: 5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K, 1 WP

“Meanwhile, Collins turned in another phenomenal game defensively. The backstop threw out a would-be base stealer in the first and fourth innings to up his season total to 12, good for second among Carolina League catchers. The former first-round pick also picked off Conor Marabell at second base on a throw to Dash shortstop Johan Cruz in the second inning.”

Kannapolis 12, Augusta 5

  • Joel Booker went 3-for-5 with a triple and two doubles.
  • Mitch Roman, 3-for-4 with an HBP.
  • Jameson Fisher was 1-for-4 with a double, walk and two strikeouts.
  • Micker Adolfo hit a grand slam during a 2-for-4 night. He also drew a walk.
  • Bernardo Flores: 6 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 6 K, 2 HR
