Spencer Adams throws a Maddux to regain some attention at Birmingham

Spencer Adams has been overshadowed by the gaudy strikeout totals of Michael Kopech, Jordan Guerrero and Matt Cooper, but the 21-year-old was able to top his rotationmates in terms of efficiency.

Adams threw a Maddux on Friday night, needing just 96 pitches to shut out Mobile. He allowed just three singles and a walk while striking out eight, which is only a slight improvement on his walk-to-strikeout ratio for the season. He erased one runner with a double play, another was caught stealing and another was thrown out at home, meaning Adams faced just 28 batters over the course of the evening.

Known for his control, Adams has issued just eight walks over 7513 innings. The concern is that he doesn’t miss enough bats to play at the higher levels, but he’s improved in this category from his first season in Birmingham to his second:

  • 2016: 11.3% K, 4.4% BB
  • 2017: 18.9% K, 2.6% BB

Adams now has a 3.46 ERA over 12 starts and 7513 innings, and with only three unearned runs on the season.
