Carnage in Durham, and the Arizona League opens play

Durham Bulls
Durham Bulls Athletic Park

As the score of the Charlotte Knights game might suggest, little went as planned.

The Durham Bulls stomped them by a score of 17-3, and perhaps the one-hour, 19-minute delay due to heavy rains and a loss of power should have given everybody a hint that weird stuff was afoot.

And if that wasn’t enough proof, there’s the fourth inning. The Knights were already down 6-0 at the time, and by the time the fourth ended, they trailed 17-0. The first 11 Bulls reached, and all of them came around to score.

The sequence: Walk, error, single, walk, walk, single, single, homer, walk, double, homer. The first 10 batters reached against Jake Dunning, who departed without retiring a batter, and Matt Purke gave up a three-run homer upon entering the seal the deal.

As you might expect, there was some frustration on Charlotte’s side. Both Mark Grudzielanek and Cody Asche were ejected. Baseball America’s Josh Norris summed it up:
