James Shields fares well enough in second rehab start

MLB: Chicago White Sox at Minnesota Twins Marilyn Indahl-USA TODAY Sports

James Shields made his second rehab start against Gwinnett, and he can call it a success -- five effective innings, 72 pitches thrown. He aimed to be done with rehab after two outings, and that might be good enough for his next turn.

Jake Petricka might beat him to Chicago. Brad Goldberg was optioned to Charlotte after Thursday’s game, and Petricka seems like a good bet to return to the bullpen. He threw rehab outings for Charlotte on a regular reliever’s schedule, and two of them were scoreless.

Should both get called up by their next availability, that will leave Carlos as the only active rehabber. He felt good enough after his 2017 regular-season debut with Winston-Salem to make a second scheduled start with Charlotte on Sunday. That’s a great sign, although since he was a late scratch from his second spring outing, it can’t be taken as a given until he actually makes it to the mound.
