Courtney Hawkins has bounced back from a disastrous first month and subsequent DL stint

MLB: Spring Training-Chicago White Sox at Texas Rangers Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

Given that Courtney Hawkins was the butt of jokes during a merciless early-season nosedive, it’s only fair to notice how ... normal ... his line looks since he returned to Birmingham.

Something was clearly wrong with Hawkins, because he started the season striking out at an insane rate, even by his standards. He fanned 53 times over his first 93 plate appearances — that’s a 57-percent strikeout rate — before going on the DL with a thyroid problem on May 12.

He returned to action on June 6 and struck out seven times over his first two rehab games with the Intimidators. He overcame the rocky return to build momentum over one week apiece at Kannapolis and Winston-Salem before climbing back to Birmingham.

His second stint started on June 22, and after another DL stint -- this one just 10 days — he returned to the Barons on June 3, playing every game since.

His line looks dramatically different over these 11 games. Including a big night against Mobile on Wednesday, here’s what he’s done with the Barons before and after the first DL stint.

  • Before: .135/.161/.281, 3.2% BB, 57.0% K over 93 PA
  • After: .243/.341/.351, 11.4% BB, 20.5% K over 44 PA

Hawkins has a long way to go before he can recover his prospect status, but it’s heartening to see him rally to put up a fight after the way his season started.
