Dylan Cease was rehabbing from Tommy John surgery when the Cubs selected him in the sixth round of the 2014 draft (although they signed him for $1.5 million, which is second-round money). They’ve since brought him along quite cautiously:
- 2015: 24 innings in the Arizona Rookie League
- 2016: 44.2 innings in short-season A-ball
- 2017: 51. 2 innings at A-ball South Bend
This season seems to be about allowing him to get up and down over the course of a five-month season, because he averaged just 68 pitches over his 13 starts in South Bend.
Rick Hahn said he didn’t want to overwrite any throwing program the Cubs had him on immediately, but they might tweak it depending on how strong he looks over the last 1½ months of the minor league season. For the time being, you’ll probably see starts like his first one with Kannapolis on Tuesday -- five innings, 58 pitches. Well, you’ll probably see 58 pitches, at least. The five innings might be harder to repeat with that kind of restraint.
