Baseball America updated its top White Sox prospects list, a day too soon, what with Blake Rutherford now factoring in prominently. On the other hand, the list was unveiled on what might be Yoan Moncada’s last day in these updates.
The good news? Rutherford ranks in BA’s top 100 (No. 36), along with the other top eight White Sox prospects, so it’s easy to figure out which slot he occupies.
Here are the revised rankings (with the preseason ranks):
- Yoan Moncada (1)
- Eloy Jimenez (NA)
- Michael Kopech (5)
- Blake Rutherford (NA)
- Luis Robert (NA)
- Reynaldo Lopez (3)
- Lucas Giolito (2)
- Dylan Cease (NA)
- Jake Burger (NA)
- Dane Dunning (NR)
It’s curious that Dunning has nosed ahead of Hansen, especially now that Dunning no longer has the advantage of level. Hansen’s write-up didn’t have a discouraging word, either.
Besides the lack of Hansen, the other signs of the system’s depth? Lopez dropping three spots during a good season, and the fact that three legitimate “rising” prospects aren’t able to now crack even the top 11. BA identified Spencer Adams, Micker Adolfo and Nicky Delmonico was guys who have distinguished themselves in 2017, and that used to be enough to generate significant buzz. Of course, there’s a reason why the farm system is as deep as it is.
