An in-person report from Kannapolis, a big blast for Eloy Jimenez and more

I caught the Kannapolis Intimidators play the Lakewood Blueclaws on Saturday night, a largely quiet affair until the eighth inning. Lakewood starter Felix Paulino held Kanny in check through seven strong innings, and Addison Russ was on his way to getting the first two outs in the eighth when Lakewood shortstop Raul Rivas dropped Evan Skoug’s major-league pop-up (there wasn’t much in the way of wind).

Luis Gonzalez changed the tone of the game with Kannapolis’ second-biggest drive of the night -- a game-tying RBI triple off the right-field wall.

(Cohoes’ Zach Remillard topped him with a three-run homer that capped the surge.)

Gonzalez has dusted himself off well after a sluggish start to his pro career. The third-round pick out of New Mexico is hitting .308/.394/.473 over 23 games in August, with a respectable 17.3 strikeout rate and a 10.6 percent walk rate. It’s not a bad Adam Haseley impersonation. I mentioned that because Haseley was playing center and batting third for Lakewood, raising his line to .250/.333/.375 with a double and two walks.
